Once the sun goes down, the show still isn't over. The Perseid meteor shower peaks that night under a completely dark New Moon, offering up to 100 meteors per hour without any blinding moonlight.

Catching this event requires precise timing and the right gear. Here is how the mechanics and local timings shake out:

  • The Path of Totality: The shadow first touches the Earth at 16:58 UTC along the Arctic coastline. The maximum duration of totality reaches 2 minutes and 18.2 seconds over the Denmark Strait at 17:45:57 UTC.
  • The Sunset Eclipse in Spain: Western Spain will experience totality very low on the western horizon starting around 8:27 PM local time, lasting up to 1 minute and 50 seconds.
  • United Kingdom Deep Partial: The UK will see a deep partial eclipse starting at 6:17 PM BST, peaking at 7:13 PM BST with 90% to 91% of the sun covered.
  • Paris Sunset Crescent: Paris observers will see a 92% to 93% partial eclipse starting around 7:21 PM CEST and peaking at 8:17 PM CEST.
  • New York City Partial: NYC gets a quick afternoon partial eclipse with 9% to 10% coverage peaking at 1:54 PM EDT.
  • Eye and Equipment Safety: You must use certified ISO 12312-2 eye protection to look at the partial phases. To shoot the event on your phone, clip a professional solar filter over the camera lens to protect the digital sensor from frying.

What Comes Next on the Cosmic Calendar

Once the marathon on August 12 wraps up, the eclipse season has one final act. A deep partial lunar eclipse will occur just over two weeks later on the night of August 27–28, 2026.

This secondary event will be visible across all of North America. The Moon will slide into the Earth's shadow starting at 9:23 PM EDT on August 27, reaching its maximum peak of 93% to 96% coverage at 12:18 AM EDT on August 28.

If you miss the August 12 meteor peak, you will have to wait a very long time for a similar view. The next time the Perseid peak perfectly aligns with a New Moon night won't happen again until 2045.
